Niklas Beller

I am a Master's student in Economics at the University of Bonn, currently on an exchange semester at ENSAE Paris. My academic focus is on quantitative and empirical methods in economics, with particular interests in macroeconomics, labor economics, and public policy.

I have extensive research experience working with leading economists on topics ranging from inflation dynamics and asset returns to capital gains taxation and household finance. My work combines rigorous economic theory with advanced econometric methods and large-scale data analysis. I am proficient in R, MATLAB, Stata, and Python.

Prior to my Master's studies, I completed my Bachelor's degree in Economics at the University of Mannheim. I am a merit-based scholarship recipient of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation.

Coordinating a team of two RAs on contributions to Public Policy, Labor Economics, and Public Economics. Conducted extensive literature reviews, data collection and analysis. Built datasets from German databases, data handling and visualization.

Research Assistant - Professor Moritz Schularick Oct 2024 - Apr 2025

Kiel Institute for the World Economy

Worked on a paper about inflation surprises and asset returns. Updated the Jordà–Schularick–Taylor Macrohistory Database for 18 countries' macroeconomic time series post-2020 using IMF, OECD, and World Bank data. Implemented Kalman filtering and state-space models in R to smooth missing macro series.

Worked for Professor Malmendier and the financial markets team on the yearly report. Analyzed ECB datasets on innovation and stability of the German financial sector.

Research Assistant - Professor Moritz Kuhn Mar 2024 - Aug 2024

Worked on a paper on the dynamics of unrealized and realized capital gains. Linked panel data on stock holdings of 20,000+ Dutch households with daily stock prices and analyzed distributional effects of shocks. Extensively used DataStream and Stata to create the connection of prices and panel data.
